What do IT consultants actually add to an organisation?

IT consultants look after the generally unknown dark side of a business - the information tech side of things. IT consultants can add value to the business when what they do is understood. Consultants can add a specialised view, be an objective opinion and increase their capacity to reach a deadline.

Efficiency

Small and large businesses may use an IT consultant as a way to “stay in the game” by implementing new operational approaches. External influence can be what the business needs to be able to get things done. Often internal politics can slow down the processes and prevent action from eventuating quickly. A good consultant should be able to work on projects without creating dependency on their role for future follow-on work.

Streamlining

The expertise of an IT consultant allows them to streamline their solutions due to their training, experience and capabilities. IT consultants can build bridges among employees and teams by implementing communication and project management techniques.

Scale up / scale down

Most IT contractors offer their services on an hourly or contractual basis to allow for greater control. The ability of IT contractors to scale up and down avoids paying taxes, fees and costs avoided with a full time staff member. The short term staffing needs can be met quickly associated when hiring consultants as the firm may have multiple consultants or contractors who can perform the work and they are available almost instantly.

Reliability

While in house tech can be good, it can in other cases be costly, time consuming and below spec. When employees have the role, often monotonous IT tasks can be left until the end of the week because they have so many other pressing items to attend to. There is security in the fact that IT Consultants are motivated to ensure the work is done so that their contract renews and because they will be directly responsible if it wasn’t done. We all know the pain of lost documents and server breakdowns where documents we have been working on for hours no longer can be accessed. IT Consultants can install systems which back up your work to save this lost time and lost resources. IT consultants have a clear outline of what they are required to do so this can reduce the pain of role conflict and accidental task neglect.
